Music legend Sir Elton John has marked a milestone in his recovery from alcoholism this week.
The Grammy, Tony and Oscar award-winning artist has been candid about his struggles with addiction. His recent biopic “Rocket Man” detailed many of the excesses of his life.
The “Rocket Man” singer commemorated the personal milestone Monday by sharing a photo of his sobriety coin on Instagram.
John posted a picture of his Alcoholics Anonymous sobriety coin to social media. , “29 years ago today, I was a broken man.”
“I finally summoned up the courage to say 3 words that would change my life: ‘I need help’. Thank you to all the selfless people who have helped me on my journey through sobriety. I am eternally grateful.”
Last month, “Diamonds,” a compilation of John’s greatest hits reached No. 7 on the Billboard 200, making it the artist’s 20th top 10 album on the list.
John became the 10th musician to achieve the distinction.
The 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health found that 15.1 million adults in the United States had Alcohol Use Disorder — including 9.8 million men and 5.3 million women.
And according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, about 88,000 people die across the country from alcohol-related causes each year. It’s the third leading preventable cause of death in the US, the institute says.
