Several people were wounded after a mortar attack hit the compounds of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia and the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) on Sunday in the Somali capital of Mogadishu.

James Swan, special representative of the UN Secretary-General for Somalia, said there is no justification for such despicable acts of violence in the Horn of the African nation.

“I am appalled by this blatant act of terrorism against our personnel, who work together with the Somali people on humanitarian, peacebuilding, and development issues,” Swan said in a statement issued in Mogadishu.

The mortars landed inside the UN and AMISOM facilities at about 1:15 pm local time, injuring several people.

“Thankfully, the majority of our staff is unhurt. I wish our wounded colleagues a full recovery from their injuries,” said Swan.

Al-Qaida-linked al-Shabaab militant group claimed responsibility for the attack.
