Seven missing after Turkish cargo vessel sinks off Libya – coastguard

Read < 1 minute

Seven crew members are missing after a Turkish cargo vessel sank off the Libya coast as high winds and waves battered the region, a coastguard official said.

Navy spokesman General Ayoub Qassem said that the Turkish-flagged ship was carrying marble dust and was about 2-2.5 nautical miles from shore when it radioed a call seeking help, Reuters reports.

Six of the Turkish crew members were rescued after the ship requested assistance several kilometres from the port of Misrata.

“We are still searching for seven of the Turkish ship’s crew members but unfortunately the bad weather is hindering the coast guards’ work,” Issa said.
