Seven die as tropical cyclone Dineo hits Mozambique
Seven people have been reported dead as tropical cyclone Dineo continues to wreak havoc in Mozambique, according to a report by SABC.
The number of the dead is expected to increase as more heavy rains are expected in the southern parts of the country according to authorities.
“We have seven people who are dead. Their deaths were caused by the trees that fell on their houses. They did not die the streets because we had warnings before the cyclone and we told the people they have to stay in the safety areas and they followed that instruction.” Director of National Emergency Rescue Services, Mauricio Xerinda said
According to Mozambique’s Journal Noticas, collecting and systematizing data is complicated due to the destruction of communications systems in almost all of the southern province inhambane which has been hit strongly by the severe weather. The pathways have been blocked due to fallen trees and electricity transmission poles, floods and lack of mobile telephone networks, making it impossible to carry out rescue missions and survey.
Fragments of roof‚ twisted corrugated iron‚ trees snapped in half and stranded dolphins were among the sights that greeted residents in parts of Mozambique on Thursday after an overnight pummelling from Cyclone Dineo, reports Times Live.
Eight dolphins‚ including two juveniles‚ died in Inhassoro early on Thursday when 16 dolphins were found stranded on beach
The tropical depression, which is now referred to as ex-Dineo, has been downgraded from a category four tropical cyclone to a tropical depression after making landfall near Inhambane on Wednesday night
Rescue services in South Africa are on high alert as Tropical Storm Dineo makes its way into the country after it claimed seven lives and destroyed hundreds of homes and buildings in neighbouring Mozambique.
This is expected to continue until Friday night. It is predicted that the system will spill over into Botswana and Namibia by Saturday
