Senegal was knocked out of the 2019 Beach Soccer World Cup quarterfinals on Thursday following a 4-2 defeat by Portugal at the Los Pynandi Stadium in Asuncion, Paraguay.

Mamadou Sylla’s emphatic strike gave Senegal the lead before Jordan leveled for the Portuguese. An own goal by Lansana Diassy and further strikes from Le Martins and his brother Be Martins gave Portugal a commanding 4-1 lead.

Raoul Mendy netted a late goal which proved only to be a consolation for the African champions.

After the game, Portugal’s Madjer and Jordan both went over to comfort Senegal’s distraught goalkeeper Al Seyni Ndiaye.

The defeat means Senegal has failed to advance past the quarterfinal stage for the fourth time following similar attempts in 2007, 2011 and 2017.

Portugal will play Japan in the second semifinal on November 30 at the same venue. Italy will play Russia, conquerors of defending champions Brazil, in the first semifinal at the same venue.
