Senegal marked its 57th independence anniversary on Tuesday.
This year’s celebrations focused on the “Role of the forces of defense and security in the protection of the environment”.
The ceremony was held at the Avenue of General De Gaulle in Dakar with more than 3,800 military, paramilitary forces and 1,800 civilians participating in the parade.
According to Senegalese President Macky Sall, natural resources are the vital substance of the country’s productive base. The President has therefore ordered the defense and security forces to make intensify their efforts in protecting fisheries, forestry and plant resources.
Senegal, a former French colony, gained its independence on 4 April 1960.
Various world leaders wished the Senegalese people a happy Independence Day, including Indian President Pranab Mukherjee, who wished progress and prosperity for the African nation.
“On behalf of the Government, the people of India and on my own behalf, I extend to you, the Government and the people of the Republic of Senegal warm greetings and felicitations on the occasion of your Independence Day,” President Mukherjee said.
“Please accept, Excellency, my good wishes for your personal health and well-being, as well as for progress and prosperity of the friendly people of the Republic of Senegal,” he added.
