The hunt for a section of 37 inmates who fled after a prison break in south-western regional capital of Toliara in Madagascar by security agencies is on.

Six of the inmates were arrested a few hours after they staged the daring escape on Monday.

The prisoners took advantage of the work boycott by the prisons staff that started last week.

No official statement has been issued concerning the incident that dominated the Malagasy media on Tuesday.

The Malagasy prisons workers’ union reiterated in Antananarivo Monday their determination to continue with their strike until the government addresses their concerns.

The grievances include a demand for higher salaries and improved working conditions.

The last prison break in Madagascar happened in early January 2009.
