Scientists in Costa Rica develop a machine that converts plastic waste into diesel

Scientists in Costa Rica  have developed a machine that converts plastic waste into diesel.

Their prototype machine takes in recyclable waste like plastic bags and bottles and turns them into fuel.

It has been developed by a company called Balanced Energy with assistance from the National University. While the company has only developed a prototype so far, they estimate that the machine can turn 1 kilogramme of plastic into a litre of diesel fuel in just 20 minutes.

The project is the first of its kind in Latin America and it is hoped that it could reduce Costa Rica’s fuel import bill and get rid of a significant chunk of rubbish.

The technology, if commercially implemented will considerably address India’s rising problem of hazardous plastic waste.
