Three female students were kidnapped from their hostels on Monday night by unknown gunmen in Nigeria’s economic capital, Lagos, the country’s police say.

Dolapo Badmus, the state police spokesperson confirmed this development to Xinhua news agency, saying that detectives are working to secure the safe release of the girls.

The gunmen stormed Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary school at about 8 p.m, local time and took three female students along with them.

The school, located at Agunfoye-Lugbusi village, is owned by the Anglican Communion, Lagos Diocese.

Abduction is not new in Nigeria. Over 300 foreigners and ransom-able citizens have been seized in the Niger Delta since 2006. Almost all have been released unharmed after paying a ransom.

In 2013, Islamists militia group Boko Haram also abducted almost 300 school girls from Chibok, and they have never been rescued. There have been reports that some of the girls were sold out and married to the militants.
