Machar fled South Sudan in July 2016 after fierce clashes between his forces and troops allied with President Salva Kiir.

In the past, Kiir and several other South Sudanese officials have ruled out Machar’s return, saying he would revive tensions and fighting in the war-torn country.

Salva Kiir and former Vice President Riek Machar have been opposing each other since December 2013 when they fought side-by-side for more than 20 years with the Sudan People’s Liberation Army to obtain the independence of South Sudan.

Their rivalry has plunged Africa’s youngest state into a war that has already left more than 20,000 dead and 2 million displaced.
