A former Rwandese military official suspected of playing a key role in the 1994 genocide was re-arrested in the Netherlands on Tuesday, Dutch prosecutors revealed.

Pierre-Claver Karangwa, considered to be one of the key masterminds behind the massacre, has been the subject of a lengthy but unsuccessful extradition request by Kigali.

According to Kigali-based The New Times, Rwanda has accused Karangwa of playing a key role in the massacre of nearly 30,000 Tutsis in Mugina parish in April 1994.

He is also accused of being responsible for the murder of the Mayor of Mugina who tried to prevent the genocide.

A community-based gacaca court sentenced him in absentia to life in prison.

The former chief of army intelligence, who has lived in the Netherlands since 1998, acquired Dutch citizenship in 2004. The citizenship was however revoked over the genocide accusations.
