Rwanda will next week host a cricket tournament in memorial of the country’s 1994 Genocide that killed over one million people in a 100-day period.
The Genocide Memorial Cricket tournament will have five participants, including Rwanda, Kenya, Mali, Tanzania and Uganda.
The competition will be held between 16 June and 23 June in the capital, Kigali.
Local New Times newspaper reports the president of Rwanda’s Cricket Association to say that the teams will play against each other in a round-robin format to determine a winner.
The cricket tournament has been held every year since 2013. Kenya won the last edition held in 2018, with Uganda coming second.
The cricket memorial tournament is aimed at honouring victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, during which over one million people were killed in just a hundred days.
This year, Rwanda is marking 25 years since it experienced the genocide that not only killed over one million people, but also displaced millions more.
The killings were sparked by the murder of former president Juvénal Habyarimana on April 6 1994, whose plane was shot down overhead Kigali.
The Rwandan government has held a series of commemorative events meant to encourage Unity among Rwandans and the world at large.
