Rugby Africa postpones start of 2020 season due to coronavirus

Rugby Africa (RA), the governing body of rugby in Africa, on Thursday announced that it had indefinitely suspended the start of its 2020 season including tournaments and activities in general.
A statement by RA said that the decision was taken based on the recommendations from the Medical Committee and in consultation with World Rugby due to the coronavirus pandemic.
RA also confirmed that the Men’s and Women’s Rugby Africa Cup (RAC) which was to take place on May 30 had been postponed.
Earlier this month, RA announced the postponement of the Under-20 Barthés Trophy tournament which was due to take place in the Kenyan capital Nairobi on April 19, 22 and 26.
Rugby Africa President Khaled Babbou said the “unprecedented and uncertain situation” due to the pandemic forced the body to put everything on hold until it got a clearer overview of the situation in Africa.
“We see it as our responsibility as a governing sport body to show good citizenship and lead by example to undertake any necessary steps to support the health guidelines and authorities. All of our daily lives are affected by drastic changes, but we must act responsibly and civically, and each of us at our own level must do our part to eradicate the spread of this virus,” Babbou said in a statement.
The decision is set to be reviewed on April 25 at the next Executive Committee meeting.
RA added that discussions on the possible revision of the 2020 calendar with participating unions were ongoing.
“We have an operational continuity plan and Rugby Africa is ready to pick up its tournament schedule as soon as the situation allows. We are excited to work on the launch of our season and new plans while we pause for solidarity,” Babbou said.
