Road accident involving a bus and truck in Zambia leaves 25 dead
A bus that flipped and was later rammed by a truck in Zambia’s central district of Serenje has left twenty five people dead.
Police said 48 passengers sustained injuries in the accident involving a Scania bus, which was coming from Nakonde District, near the Tanzanian border, heading to Kitwe with 70 passengers on board.
The bus reportedly went out of control as the driver tried to negotiate a curve.
Africa Review reports that a Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) staff and two Fire Brigade officials, who were among those conducting a rescue operation at the scene of the accident, died on the spot while six police officers sustained injuries after they were hit by the truck laden with bags of maize.
The truck reportedly failed to break as it approached the accident scene and the driver did not stop.
The truck had earlier rammed an RTSA tow vehicle which was parked at the scene of accident,” said a joint statement by the police and the road safety agency.
The authorities said they had opened an investigation into the accident and were pursuing the truck driver, who was on the run.
The police and RTSA statement further said they were yet to propose to the government to ban public transport vehicles from moving at night to reduce accidents.
