Rival armies in Libya battle, threatening renewed civil war
Rival armies in Libya are once again clashing — fueling fears of a civil war in the country.
Troops loyal to the UN-backed government have clashed with forces allied with General Khalifa Haftar, based in eastern Libya. The renewed fighting is threatening gains made during the recent peace talks. There have also been reports of air strikes on a government base in the desert. General Haftar is aligned with Libya’s eastern Parliament, which refuses to recognize the UN-backed government in Tripoli.
The government of national accord is warning of a civil war and has been mobilizing its forces against Haftar’s troops.
