Rights group accuses Nigeria military of causing civilian deaths
The Nigerian military has been accused of causing the deaths of some 8,000 civilians in its fight against Boko Haram extremists.
This is according to a report released on Wednesday by human rights group Amnesty International.
The group names senior officers it wants tried for alleged war crimes, including the detention of minors, and has called on Nigeria’s newly-elected government to look into the abuses.
If correct, the figures would increase the estimated death toll from the nearly 6-year-old Islamist insurgency, which currently stands at around 13,000.
There has been no immediate response from the military.
Boko Haram is the biggest threat to security in Nigeria and beyond.
Newly inaugurated President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed to crush the insurgency. He is currently on a regional tour to discuss the threat with Nigeria’s neighbours.
