South Sudan’s opposition leader Riek Machar has confirmed that he will return to the capital Juba on April 18.
The country’s President Salva Kiir re-appointed Machar as the deputy president on February 11, the culmination of a deal to try to end months of civil war in the world’s youngest nation.
South Sudan descended into chaos in 2013 when Kiir accused Machar, who was his deputy then, of plotting to overthrow his government.
The violence has displaced more than two million people.
In a letter to the head of the body monitoring the peace process Mr Machar said he will “form with President [Salva] Kiir the Transitional Government of National Unity and hold the Transitional National Council of Ministers”.
In anticipation of Machar’s return, his troops have been arriving in the capital.
There had been some concerns about the delays in the implementation of the deal, which was signed last August.
