Rescuers call off attempts to reach 3 miners buried in gold mine in South Africa
The first footage released by the owners of the mine giving us a very clear idea of exactly what the rescuers are up against. That used to be the entrance to the Lily mine and you can see in the footage (watch clip below) what happens when a single pillar collapses. It’s incredible that most miners got out.
But one hundred metres beneath the rubble in the mine, are three people – Yvonne Mnisi, Pretty Mabuza and Solomon Nyarenda – trapped in the containerized room where they’d been working when the mine imploded.
Rescue teams have been digging and blasting their way towards where they think the container is buried
‘Well, um. What we are doing is we are taking the material that are coming down from where the drop area started, and moving that material and depositing it down lower in the mine,so that we can open up those containers and get to those people’ Rescue operator
But on Saturday there was another ground collapse and more rubble filled the hole, undoing much of the work of the rescuers. The rescue’s now been suspended. Officials say they will resume, once they have the right equipment and expertise. And that they will recover the three – dead or alive.
