Referendum vote likely to extend President Kagame’s rule

Read < 1 minute

Rwandans are voting in a referendum that could allow President Paul Kagame to remain in power for another 18 years. Polls opened in the capital Kigali early Friday with long queues witnessed. The referendum is chance to vote on several proposed changes to the constitution, but the main one is about the presidential term limits. If approved-which is highly likely,  the constitution will allow president Kagame to run for potentially another 17 years — for a third seven-year term in 2017. After which, he will still be eligible to run for a further two five-year terms, allowing him to stay in office until 2034. Critics argue the vote is an attempt to extend Kagame’s rule. Some Western countries also say the referendum undermines democracy in the central African country.
