Rebel fighters launch an offensive in Raja, South Sudan

South Sudan rebel forces allied to the country’s former first vice President Riek Machar have launched a major offensive Raja Town, the capital of Lol State in in the northwest of the East African nation, reports Radio Tamazuj.

The State’s Governor Rizig Zachariah led the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) forces in battle as the attacks came from three directions according to the state’s Minister of Information.

“People are now scattered and the governor personally is the one commanding the forces. The governor has just gone to the military barracks,” said Francis Piol Bol, Minister of Information.

The Minister said that the fighting was continuing and could not give more details.

Now I cannot give you more details because the clashes are continuing, so let’s wait until the situation returns to normal, I am now inside Raja town, we have been besieged,” he said.

Fighting between government and opposition forces around Yuai town in South Sudan’s Bieh State, has continued from Wednesday until Thursday, according to media reports.
