Read < 1 minute

Monday’s full moon was the biggest and brightest it has been for almost 70 years.

The phenomenon, called a Supermoon, happens when the moon is full at the same time that it’s orbiting at its closest point to Earth. Some of the best places to view the supermoon were in Africa.

Our correspondent Lucy Taylor went star-gazing in Tanzania.

Elsewhere on the continent, people flocked to high-rise buildings, observatories and beaches for the best view of the Supermoon.

Across the continent, the enthusiasm was palpable. Residents in Cairo stayed up way past bedtime to catch the rare astronomical phenomenon. In the clear night sky, the sheer size of the moon was spectacular.

In Cape Town, South Africa, thousands trekked up Lion’s Head for a good view of the huge moon, which was reflected in the sea below.
