The South African parliament announced that President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver his first state of the nation address on June 20, 2019 at 7pm (local time).
Ramaphosa will address a joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament for a second time this year but this address will be the first for the 6thdemocratic parliament.
It will also be Ramaphosa’s first state of the nation address as a democratically elected president.
Parliament said that the National Assembly speaker Thandi Modise and the National Council of Provinces chairperson Amos Masondo received a letter from Ramaphosa advising them of the proposed date.
“The Presiding Officers will consider the letter of the President, which will be processed by the appropriate structures of Parliament and published in the official publications of Parliament,” the statement said.
The statement further added that the presiding officers of parliament will inform the public of the details of the state of the nation ceremony and the necessary preparations being done.
Ramaphosa has pledged to create jobs and tackle deep-rooted corruption that has strangled economic growth.
Political analysts say a key test of Ramaphosa’s ability to deliver reforms will be his announcement of a new cabinet.
