Racism takes center stage in South Africa as 2016 begins

A comment by a white South African about the littering and throngs of people at the beach in Durban using the word “Monkeys” to show her disgust caused an uproar on social media by the South African people using the harsh tag #RacistsMustFall and #PennySparrow (name of the lady) to protest.

Penny Sparrow’s comment went viral instantly, but she went ahead to apologise which made things even worse for her, with many social media users being offended by her apology.

Jawitz, the Real Estate agency that Ms. Sparrow works terminated her contract following the Facebook commenting; explaining that the company does not want to be associated with racism.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has laid criminal charges against Penny Sparrow. According to local news DA member Herman Mashaba laid the criminal charges against Sparrow with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and a case has been opened.
