Prisoners in Ghana had their chance to vote in today’s presidential elections, the second time the West African nation allowed inmates to do so.
According to local news website Citi FM, about 2,276 inmates were registered to vote in the poll.
Ghana’s Supreme Court ruled in 2010 that prisoners had the right to vote, giving them the chance to take part in the selection of the country’s political leadership.
Analysts expect the elections to be a closely contested affair between incumbent President John Mahama and Nana Akufo-Addo, a veteran politician and former foreign minister.
In total, there are some 15 million registered voters.
Polling started at 07:00 GMT and will close at 17:00 GMT across the West African country.
Ghana is an exporter of gold and cocoa, and is one of Africa’s most successful oil exporters.
