Prices of soft drinks in South Africa to go higher from April 2017
In last month’s budget speech, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan announced that a sugar tax would be imposed as of 1 April 2017.
The tax will be felt on everything from fizzy drinks to flavoured water – partly as a way to tackle the country’s budget deficit.
South Africa has joined the battle against sugar, and will be the first African country to tax drinks loaded with the sweet stuff.
The country may be gaining reputation over rising cases of obesity but still, the measure is not going down well with many.
The measure has raised concerns among retailers who are already feeling the pinch when it comes to raising prices.
