Presidential decree sets Somalia’s elections on track for August
Somalia’s president, Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud, issued a decree Sunday to legalize the 2016 electoral process in Somalia, after the outgoing parliament failed to endorse the election rules reports the VOA.
Somalia’s parliament delayed the vote to endorse the elections on Saturday regardless of the international community warnings that failure to act quickly would ‘jeorpadize’ the political process in the East African county and set them several years back.
However, President Hassan by passed the parliament and announced that the elections that scheduled to take place in August as per the deal with national and regional leaders agreed last month will continue as planned.
“After seeing that the parliament can’t decide, after seeing that the time is running out, I issued a Presidential decree to legalize the electoral model” Mohamoud said in a press conference on Sunday.
