
President Xi condoles with Egypt following deadly Cairo terror attack
Chinese President Xi Jinping has sent a message of condolence to his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah el-Sisi following Sunday’s terror attack in Cairo which left at least 20 people dead and scores others injured.
In his message sent out on Wednesday, President Xi offered his deepest condolences to all the victims on behalf of the Chinese government and the Chinese people. He also expressed his most sincere sympathies to the families of those who died in the tragedy.
President Xi said that China firmly opposes terrorism and strongly condemns the attack.
Xi added that China supports the efforts made by the Egyptian government and people to combat terrorism and safeguard national stability and public safety.
A huge explosion reportedly caused by a multi-vehicle crash struck central Cairo earlier Sunday, leaving up to 20 people dead and 47 others injured, according to Xinhua.
The blast has been labelled the deadliest attack in the Egyptian capital in over two years.
A statement released by the Egyptian Interior Ministry revealed that the car causing the blast has been found containing explosives, and it was meant “to be used in a terrorist operation.”
President Xi’s condemnation of the attack has been echoed by the United Nations Security Council, which said it condemned in the strongest terms “the cowardly terrorist act”
Council members said in a statement that the perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of Sunday’s “reprehensible acts of terrorism” must be held accountable and brought to justice.
