President Uhuru calls for national day of prayers ahead of repeat presidential vote
Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has called for a national day of prayer ahead of his country’s repeat presidential election slated for October 26.
“After consultations with religious leaders, I have reached this decision to call on all Kenyans to pray for their country in their mosques, temples and churches, culminating in a National Day of Prayer on Sunday 22nd october2017,” President Uhuru said in a statement released on Wednesday.
The president’s call came barely hours after an election commissioner resigned from her position, saying the body is under siege.
“The Commission has become a party to the current crisis. The commission is under siege,” Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission’s (IEBC) commissioner Roselyn Akombe said.
“I have concluded that I am no longer making any significant contribution to the commission and to my country as a commissioner.”
Akombe tendered her resignation from New York, where she had diverted to after visiting Dubai to supervise the printing of ballot papers for next week’s poll.
In his statement, President Uhuru acknowledged that the country has been through a rough patch since the September 1 nullification of the presidential election.
“The path since the Supreme Court decision has not been easy for our country, but we thank God for seeing us through,” he said.
He however reiterated that the election the most peaceful in Kenya’s history.
