U.S. President has hailed his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah al-Sisi as a “great person,” after the two leaders met at the White House in Washington DC.
This is the second time the two leaders have met in two years, but relations between the U.S. and Egypt continue to grow.
U.S.-Egypt ties have betterd since President Trump took office, now culminating in two visits to Washington DC by President al-Sisi. He first visited in April 2017, marking the first time an Egyptian Head of State visited the U.S. in seven years.
“We’ve never had a better relationship, Egypt and the United States, than we do right now,” Trump told reporters.
The leaders held discussions on the fight against terrorism as well as trade relations between the two sides.
In his briefing, President Trump noted that the U.S. First Lady Melania Trump recently visited Egypt, saying she was impressed by that trip even though she is never easily impressed.
“What she saw with the pyramids was — you could call it the 7th wonder or the 8th Wonder of the World. She thought it was one of the most incredible things she’s seen and we have lots of pictures,” he said. “But she’s not easily impressed, she was very impressed.”
I his visit, President al-Sisi also met with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in which the American “re-affirmed the strength and importance of the US-Egypt bilateral relationship” and discussed counterterrorism efforts, “countering the Iranian regime’s malign influence” and “cases concerning US citizens in Egypt.”
