President Nguesso arrives in Rwanda ahead of genocide commemoration
The President of the Republic of Congo Denis Sassou Nguesso arrived in Kigali on Saturday ahead of Sunday’s commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Rwanda Genocide.
Rwanda has prepared an extensive commemoration to mark a quarter century since the tragedy that killed more than one million people and displaced millions others.
President Nguesso was received by his host Paul Kagame who will lead Sunday’s event in Kigali.
Rwandans who lost their loved ones during the genocide will have a chance to lay wreaths of flowers and pay their respects to the deceased.
Ahead of the commemoration, French president Emmanuel Macron ordered for a probe into his country’s “role and engagement” during that period.
Macron’s move is seen as a major milestone in the two countries’ relations, as they have in the past differed on France’s handling of the genocide.
Other than President Nguesso, other world leaders are expected in Kigali for the commemoration event. Rwanda also invited President Macron, but there are no indicators that he will attend.
