President Museveni meets members of Sudan’s military council

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Friday pledged to support collaborative efforts towards the restoration of peace and prosperity in Sudan following a meeting with members of the ruling transitional military council at Mbale State Lodge.
President Museveni said the council, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, gave him a good briefing of the situation in Sudan. Sudan has been in turmoil since the removal of former president Omar al-Bashir on April 11 following months of civilian protests against his administration.
Protesters and opposition groups had thereafter taken to the streets to demand that the military council, which subsequently took over, hand over to a civilian-led administration. The council has been under international pressure for months to transfer power.
Earlier on Friday, the ruling military council and the Forces for Freedom and Change reached a deal in which it is expected that the groups will share power during a transitional period. This will be followed by an election of a successor to Bashir.
Museveni noted that the type of conflict and tension experienced in Sudan was dangerous as it frightened away investors and affected the livelihood of people.
“In Uganda, we experienced this and we lost a lot of development time. The best way, therefore, is to agree and move in a democratic way. I am happy to hear that Sudan is moving in this direction and we wish the very best to this government in charge of the transition,” Museveni said.
