President Kenyatta pledges support to Harambee Stars for AFCON 2019 duty
Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has pledged personal and government support to the country’s football team after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed the East African side will be at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
CAF eliminated Sierra Leone from the AFCON qualifying series on Monday, effectively confirming Kenya and Ghana qualified from Group F for the continental competition to be staged in June.
“I assure you of my support and that of the Government to facilitate and provide you with the necessary resources to ensure you are well prepared for the task ahead,” President Kenyatta said.
The Leone Stars failed to honor their last three matches of qualifying due to a FIFA ban on their football association and were thus disqualified from AFCON 2019.
This will be Harambee Stars’ second appearance at AFCON in 24 years, having participated last in 2004.
Congratulations #HarambeeStars🇰🇪 for qualifying for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. I assure you of my support and that of the Government to facilitate and provide you with the necessary resources to ensure you are well prepared for the task ahead. Hongera! #AFCON2019
