President George Weah honours Arsène Wenger in Monrovia
Liberian President George Weah on Friday awarded Arsenal’s former long serving manager Arsene Wenger with his country’s highest honour at a ceremony in the capital, Monrovia.
Wenger received the Order of Distinction and be given the title of Knight Grand Commander of the Humane Order of African Redemption – the highest rank possible.
Weah’s administration earlier this week said the award was meant to recognize the Frenchman’s role in uplifting African football.
President Weah – a former footballer – played under Arsene Wenger while at French side AS Monaco in 1998.
Many other African stars have also played under Wenger, the most recent being Egypt’s Mohamed Elneny and Nigeria’s Alex Iwobi.
Wenger arrived in Monrovia on Thursday, where he received a warm welcome from thousands who had been anticipating his visit.
Current coach of the Togolese national team, Claude Le Roy, also received an award alongside Wenger.
Le Roy coached Cameroon in 1988 and recommended that Wenger should sign George Weah, who was playing for Cameroonian side Tonnerre Yaoundé at the time.
