Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday signed the Not-Too-Young-To-Run Bill into law.
The president signed the bill at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, barely two days after he promised he would do so.
The new law reduces the age restriction for presidential aspirants from 40 to 30 years, while that of gubernatorial aspirants has been cut from 35 to 30 years.
The lower age cap for senatorial aspirants has been cut from 35 to 30 years, while that of the House of Representatives membership and State House of Assembly membership both reduced from 30 to 25 years.
The president promised to sign the bill into law during his Tuesday speech to mark the West African nation’s Democracy Day celebrations.
The National Assembly had passed the bill last year, altering sections 65, 106, 131, 177 of the Constitution to reduce the constitutional age limits of the various public offices.
Nigerian is scheduled to hold its presidential election in February 2019.
Buhari in April announced that he would seek re-election in the poll.
