Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has approved foreign medical treatment for former vice president Alex Ekwueme.

The president gave the approval after he was briefed on the medical condition of the former VP.

The approval will see the state pay for Ekwueme’s treatment and immediate charter of an Air Ambulance.

The former Vice President reportedly collapsed and went into coma at his Enugu residence on Sunday.

Subsequently, Ekwueme was admitted at Memfys Hospital for Neurosurgery in the Trans-Ekulu area of the state.

Nigerian laws allow for free medical treatment for former vice-presidents and their immediate family members.

President Buhari earlier this year spent more than 100 days abroad on two separate occasions, for medical treatment.

The 74-year-old was in London for treatment of an undisclosed illness.
