Algeria’s President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has returned to his country after a private visit to Geneva, Switzerland, during which he underwent “periodic medical checkups”, Algeria’s presidency has announced in a communiqué.

“His Excellency President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika has returned home on Friday 29 April 2016, after a private visit to Geneva, during which he underwent periodic medical checkups,” said the communiqué.

Bouteflika flew to Switzerland on Sunday for the medical tests.

He suffered a stroke in 2013, which is believed to have adversely affected his health.

He has occasionally been seen giving televised appearances while seated on a wheelchair.

Rumors about the Algerian president’s poor health have resurfaced recently, especially after a photo was posted on French Prime Minister Manuel Valls’ Twitter account on April 10 in which he appears weakened.

Bouteflika took office in 1999 and has been re-elected three times, with the constitution modified to do away with a limit on presidential mandates.
