Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo on Thursday announced a $219 million project aimed at improving education standards in the country.
The Ghana Accountability and Learning Outcomes Project (GALOP) targets ten thousand low-performing basic schools across the West African country.
“Through this Programme, teachers, in the early grades, will be provided with continuous training, in line with the new curriculum; schools will receive teaching and learning materials; heads of schools will be trained on improved school management techniques; and supervision and assessment systems will be strengthened,” President Akufo-Addo said.
GALOP has been co-sponsored by the Ghanaian government, the World Bank and the Department for International Development (DFID).
President Akufo-Addo noted that despite concerted efforts by his government to improve education standards in Ghana, a lot still needs to be done.
One of the 76-year-old’s pledges upon assuming office in January 2017 was to improve access to education.
“I made no secret my intention of putting education at the heart of my vision for the growth, development and transformation of Ghana,” he said on Thursday.
President Akufo-Addo noted that due to deliberate government interventions, 1.2 million Ghanaian children, the largest in the history of the country, are now in the country’s education system, 400,000 of whom would otherwise have been excluded.
