Uganda’s State Minister for Gender, Labour and Social Development, Ms. Peace Mutuzo has complained that the civil society is only concentrating on gender based violence against women and neglected men, according to a report by the Daily Monitor.

The percentage of men being violated in the East African nation has risen from 15 per cent in 2001 to 22 percent in 2016 according to the Minister. Ms. Mutuzo further added that, the growing numbers of men being battered are mostly married to working women.

“The struggle to end gender-based violence should not only be limited to women but also men who of late have reported being violated by women who are empowered and working in big offices,” Ms Mutuzo said.

The Minister was speaking during the 16 days of activism to end violence against women in Kampala on Friday, which saw over 20 men from Uganda’s Police force and civil society organizations wear high heels in solidarity with women to end violence against the fair sex in a campaign dubbed “Walk a mile in her shoes”

Uganda’s Association of Women Lawyer (FIDA) senior Advocacy officer, Ms Mary Munduru,  said violence against women is still a big challenge in the country. FIDA has received more than 5,000 gender-based violence cases so far in 2016 stretching from physical torture, sexual abuse and economic, human trafficking and genital mutilation.
