Portuguese football tactician Jose Rui Lopes Aguas is the frontrunner to be named Rwanda’s coach after the country’s federation announced a three-man shortlist.

Aguas, having been in charge of Cape Verde, is seen as the man with the ability to turn a small footballing nation like Rwanda into a force to reckon with.

Supersport quotes Ferwafa president Vincent Degaule Nzamwita to have said earlier this month; “My dream is to get a coach like the one of Cape Verde. He inspired Cape Verde from a small team to a big one on the African continent. He was even recognized by Fifa.”

“For a country with a population of 500,000, that was a massive achievement to qualify for Afcon twice in a row. We are almost 13 million in Rwanda. I think he would introduce a strong mentality within our players so if we can get a coach with that kind of profile then we shall be good to go.”

The other two coaches in the list are German tactician Antoine Hey and Spanish-Swiss coach Raoul Savoy who was in charge of Central African Republic in 2014 and Gambia the following year.

Hey, who is no foreigner to East African football, coached Kenya in 2009 and was also in charge of Lesotho (2004-2006) and Gambia (2006-2007). His profile with small football nations has been important in making it to the final shortlist.
