Popular South Sudanese radio station shut down by authorities
A popular South Sudanese radio station has been shut down by security officials in the country, the latest media outlet to be closed.
Reuters reports a senior journalist at the Eye Radio based in Juba as saying the country’s officials had stopped broadcasts without giving any reason.
“Eye Radio has been officially shut down by the National Security indefinitely,” he said, adding that three security officers “shut down the radio station, locked the three studios and took the keys with them.”
“They ordered all the journalists to leave the station immediately and we are now in the process of going home,” he said, adding that the radio’s chief executive was going to meet the director-general of National Security for an explanation.
South Sudan has continued to face violence even after the signing of a peace deal last year that prompted the return of Riek Machar to Juba to take up the position of first vice president.
In July forces loyal to Machar battled those loyal to President Salva Kiir outside the presidential palace, forcing Machar to flee the capital.
