Police to undergo literacy training as UNESCO steps up fight against illiteracy in South Sudan
South Sudan’s education indicators remain among the worst in the world, with the illiteracy level at seventy percent. That’s despite increases in school enrollment over the past few years. It is estimated that more than one million primary school aged children, mostly from rural areas, are not in school, while the few schools that do exist are not conducive to learning. In an effort to change these staggering statistics, UN agency UNESCO has developed an initiative that will reduce the illiteracy level in the society, and it will start with the police force.
“We have started a police literacy training. As you know the police cannot do its job as it should be if the officers cannot read and write. So, this is the first prerequisite that UNESCO is focusing on now with the police” Said Salah Zaki Khaled, Chief, Unesco South Sudan
