More than 200 youths from the main opposition party in Zimbabwe who took to the streets to protest alleged police brutality were dispersed by the police with teargas, water cannons and batons on Wednesday in the country’s capital of Harare.
The police intercepted the protesters who were planning to hand in a petition to the offices of the Ministry of Home Affairs which is mandated with overseeing the police reports Reuters.
In the skirmishes, two pick- ups one belonging to the state broadcaster ZBC and the other to the police were torched.
Police blocked the streets to the rock throwing protestors; some of the protestors also threw tear gas canisters at the police.
“We have been seeing a deliberate attempt by the police to intimidate, harass and silence the people of Zimbabwe,” Movement for Democratic Change party, Youth Assembly secretary general Lovemore Chinoputsa told Reuters TV during the march.
