Pistorius family to sue film maker
The family of South Africa’s former paralympian Oscar Pistorius says it will sue the makers of a new film on the life of the athlete, who is serving a priton sentence for the murder of his girlfriend.
A family statement released on Tuesday said the film, which is set to be released in November, was “a gross misrepresentation of the truth”.
“The ‘film’ is rather a representation of what the prosecution tried to portray. We will be taking legal action,” it said.
Pistorius, a double amputee, was in 2016 sentenced to six years in prison for the murder of Reeva Steenkamp, a model and law graduate.
In 2013, the athlete fired bullets from a handgun through a closed toilet door in his home in Pretoria, killing his girlfriend.
In his defence, the 30-year-old said he thought he was shooting an intruder.
Steenkamp’s family distanced themselves from the movie, Blade Runner Killer.
“Any impression that is created that… the movie is endorsed by the Steenkamp family is untrue and incorrect,” the family said.
The South African State will appeal Pistorius sentence in November, seeking to have him in jail for longer than the six years given. It argues that the sentence given was too lenient for a murder charge.
