Pilgrims take part in “Stoning of the Devil” ritual in Mina
In the Saudi city of Mina, Muslim pilgrims are taking part in the ritual Stoning of the Devil, the last major rite of the Hajj pilgrimage.
During the ritual, Muslims throw stones and pebbles at three walls — formerly pillars. It’s a demonstration that they have rejected sin. Mina, east of Mecca, is where last year’s deadly stampede took place. Hundreds of people were killed en route to the Jamarat Bridge to perform the stoning. The bridge is multi-storied to accommodate the huge number of pilgrims. This year nearly two million people have take part in the Hajj.
Saudi authorities have introduced several safety measures to prevent a repeat of the 2015 tragedy.
