Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister James Marape declared a state of emergency on Thursday following violent riots in the Pacific island nation that resulted in 16 deaths, according to reports.
Thousands took to the streets of the capital, Port Moresby, with many seen carrying looted goods amidst billowing black smoke.
Nine casualties occurred in Port Moresby, while seven deaths were reported in Lae. In response, Marape suspended the chief of police and top officials in the finance and treasury departments, initiating a government review of the riots’ causes to safeguard democracy and the rule of law.
Marape said the country placed 1,000 military personnel on standby to prevent further unrest. The violence in the capital subsided after additional police were flown in to restore order.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that while Canberra had not received requests for assistance, they were closely monitoring the situation, affirming their strong relationship with Papua New Guinea.
