Over 4.7 million Zimbabweans register for 2018 election

Over 4.7 million people have registered as voters in Zimbabwe, the electoral authority said on Wednesday, though the exercise is still on.

The Southern Africa nation is set to conduct a presidential poll in 2018, though dates have not been issued yet.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) said while mobile registration centers have closed, registration is continuing at 63 static district centers across the country.

The body had initially targeted to register 7 million voters for next year’s polls but it later admitted that the figure was unrealistic and revised it down to about 5 million.

There have been calls from various stakeholders to have the registration exercise to be extended to accommodate more people that haven’t registered yet.

Caretaker president Emmerson Mnangagwa in his inaugural speech last month pledged that the election would go on as planned, easing fears of a possible postponement following the political situation in the country.

Mnangagwa took office on 24 November following Robert Mugabe’s resignation after 37 years in power.

The 75-year-old has been endorsed by the ruling Zanu-PF party as its candidate for the election.
