
Obama to open African-American Smithsonian museum #APeoplesJourney
United States President Barack Obama will officially open the National Museum of African-American History and Culture in the company of thousands of people in a three day festivities reports CNN

The new Smithsonian will chronicle the complex relationship between the United States and a people it once enslaved, and tell the story of those who worked to make the necessary changes to bring the country to where it is today according to NBC

The newest Smithsonian Museum showcases the decades of struggles of black Americans from fighting against slavery, determination to end segregation and the Civil Rights Movement. In addition it documents the contributions made by African-Americans in areas such as the military, sports, culture and the arts.
The museum opening on Saturday with thousands in attendance is a star-studded affair in with stars such as First Lady Michelle Obama, former President George W. Bush, Chief Justice John Roberts and Rep. John Lewis, a veteran of the civil rights movement with music entertainment from Stevie Wonder, Patti LaBelle and Denyce Graves as well as appearances by Robert De Niro and Angela Bassett, who will read the words of black poets and historians according to CNN
The museum project was started in 2003 when Bush signed a bill creating it. Ground was broken in February 2012 and finally completed in 2016.
The $540m Smithsonian National Museum of African-American History and Culture contains over 36,000 items, ranging from trade goods used to buy slaves in Africa to a segregated railway car from the 1920s and a red Cadillac convertible belonging to rock’n’roll pioneer Chuck Berry.
