The Norwegian Refugee Council on Friday said one of its employees has been detained in South Sudan by the country’s National Security Service.

Without identifying the said employee, NRC spokeswoman Tuva Bognes said the Security officials came to the NRC offices in the capital, Juba, on Thursday and a male employee “was asked to come along.”

She said more details would be made available later.

“We have, unfortunately, no information as to why he is being held,” Bognes said.

She added that NRC staffers have not been able to meet with their colleague since he was taken by the security authorities.

South Sudan Minister of Information Michael Makuei could not immediately be reached for comment.

A foreign correspondent affiliated to the Associated Press was earlier this week deported for being too critical of the government.

The journalist, Justin Lynch, said he had been arrested by government agents.

South Sudan has been riddled by violence since December 2013 after President Salva Kiir accused his then deputy Riek Machar of plotting a coup against his government. Machar refuted the claims but went on to mobilize a rebel force to fight the government.

A UN-backed peace deal signed in 2015 has continually been violated by both sides.

There are fears of a possible genocide if the war continues.
