
Nigerien authorities begin cracking down on human smuggling rings
Thousands of people cross the Sahara Desert though Niger to reach Libya, before crossing the Mediterranean in search of greener pastures in Europe.
Human smugglers in the region have been taking advantage of their desperation. In a country where nearly half the population survives on less than two dollars a day, a trafficker can make 5,000 dollars a trip.
But authorities’ crackdown on the illegal practice has left smugglers and migrants struggling to survive.
