Police in Nigeria are looking for one of their own in connection to the death of a popular football player.

Tiamiyu Kazeem was killed Saturday in an apparent hit and run during a police stop in Sagamu area in the southwest state of Ogun.

One of Kazeem’s teammates, Sanni Abubukar says officers from Nigeria’s anti-robbery unit (SARS) stopped Kazeem, accused him of being an internet fraudster and insisted on taking him to the nearby police station.

Abubukar says he and Kazeem obliged and followed officers to a police station in their vehicle.

According to a statement from Kazeem’s team, the Remo Stars, at some point during the trip, Kazeem was taken from the vehicle, knocked to the ground and then ran over by an oncoming car.

The club accuses the SARS unit of police brutality and demand a full investigation.

State Police spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed in a statement that there is an order for the ‘immediate arrest’ of the officer involved in the incident.

Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has ordered the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID) to take over the case.
